The Last Ten Years
The other night – while doing the dishes – I got to thinking about how much my life has changed since the birth of my daughter – ten years ago.
I feel like so many things have been put on hold, hence the nom de guerre “erstwhile adventurer,” but there are also so many ways my life has improved since becoming a father . . .
Truly of all of the things I have learned in the past 10 years, the most important is the selflessness that comes from being a parent. There is no way to understand this by having a dog or cat, babysitting or spending the day with your niece or nephew. There is a mental and emotional change that happens when their small lives depend on your actions. Parents will understand this. Others will not.
Thinking of the past decade, I quickly listed out some things I’ve done while being so busy:
- Become a father to four awesome kids
- Was invited to and joined the American Mountain Men
- Renewed my EMT license twice
- Lost two incredible dogs, but gained one barking fool dog and an excellent farm dog (that are both also great)
- Was part of an FBI Raid. Seriously everyone should try this, but only once (bad for the nerves)
- Got a travel trailer
- Was named Manager of the Year at my job
- Bought land and started homesteading
So for not doing much, it sure is doing a lot. 🙂
